VRC Pan-Pacific Championship PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 March 2010 01:44

This past weekend, while the varsity football squad fought its way to another CCS Championship, a different team was hard at work over 2000 miles away.

Last Thursday, eight Bellarmine students traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii to participate in the VEX Robotics Pan-Pacific Championship. The event, involving almost 90 teams from Hawaii, the West Coast, and China, is one of the largest robotics events in the world. Bellarmine entered three teams into the fray (254A, B, and C), with surprising results.

Team 254A seeded 2nd after qualification rounds, one of only two teams to go undefeated the entire tournament. Because of its high standing, it was in prime position to first pick Team 254C, then 254B – forming an all-Bellarmine alliance for the double elimination rounds. The trio went nearly undefeated on its way to the top, dropping only a single match when all three teams broke down completely. In the end though, the Bells managed to pull through, taking all three tournament titles in an unprecedented sweep. All in all, the team collected five trophies from the championship event, making it one of the most successful tournaments in Bellarmine Robotics history.

This latest victory marks 254A’s fifth tournament win this season, 254C’s third, and 254B’s first. Click here for a video of the first quarterfinal (Bellarmine is on the right; 254A starts in the foreground and 254C in the background).

From the Bellarmine homepage:

This past weekend, Bellarmine sent two if its Vex Robotics teams (254A and 254S) to the Inaugural All-Star Competition in Orlando, Florida. Both met with great success, collectively winning the tournament as well as the all-around Excellence Award. This latest victory marks the fourth win in four weeks for Team 254A, a record unprecedented in Vex Robotics history. Despite their high level of success, the two robots were crewed only by five students, a small number for even a single team. Please congratulate John Mueller '10 (254A), Taylor Furtado '10 (254A), Avery Norris '11 (254A), Kendall Searing '11 (254S), and Ashton Chacon '13 (254S) on a job well done.

VEX Build is On! PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 September 2009 12:19

VRC build sessions have now started - they are:

  • Monday and Wednesday, after school until 4:00 PM.
  • Tuesday and Thursday, after school until 5:00 PM.

Cleanup will be announced 10 minutes before the room is closed.  At that time, everybody should drop what they are doing and clean up the room so Mr. Janke and/or Mr. Urhausen can go home on time.  Unfinished components can go in team boxes; individual pieces should go back in their respective boxes.  Exempt members can continue building for an additional five minutes, or choose to go home immediately.

Build sessions have no bearing on your grade, but your participation will affect how often you get to travel with us.  Ultimately, you should arrange with your team captain when to come in; having too many people working on a robot is almost as bad as having too few.

Keep in mind that the first mandatory tournament for everybody is at Bellarmine, on 10/31.  All teams are expected to represent Bellarmine College Prep and Team 254 well with gracious attitudes and functioning robots.
